Part-Time Farmhand / Farm Educator
Location: Sugar Roots Farm – New Orleans, LA
Schedule: This position requires availability Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays
Position Summary
Sugar Roots Farm is seeking a dedicated part-time farmhand/farm educator to join our team. This role combines hands-on farm responsibilities with engaging educational experiences for children and visitors. The ideal candidate will enjoy working with animals, gardening, and teaching students from PreK through high school in a fun and compassionate environment.
Key Responsibilities
Lead educational tours for school groups and service-learning students
Assist in managing volunteers and interns
Care for farm animals and practice sustainable husbandry
Support summer camp programs and community events
Participate in daily farm chores, gardening, and facility upkeep
Contribute to disaster preparation and cleanup (storms, floods, freezes)
Provide assistance in veterinary emergencies, including transportation and basic care
Managing farm stand and sales
Qualifications
Experience working with children and diverse groups of people
Strong communication and leadership skills
Patience, understanding, and enthusiasm for education
Ability to take initiative and work both independently and as part of a team
Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs
Shared Farm Responsibilities
At Sugar Roots Farm, every team member plays an important role in keeping the farm running smoothly. In addition to specific job duties, staff contribute to shared responsibilities that support our animals, land, and community:
Daily Operations: Assist with routine farm management and guide volunteers and interns in learning farm tasks.
Emergency Preparedness: Help prepare for and recover from natural disasters such as hurricanes, heavy rain, or freezes across gardens, barns, and animal areas.
Farm Maintenance: Support in cleaning and maintaining barns, kitchens, greenhouses, tool sheds, tack rooms, compost toilets, and overall grounds.
Events: Contribute to the planning and execution of community and fundraising events on the farm.
Gardening: Assist with garden bed preparation, seeding, pest management, and fertilization throughout each season.
Animal Care (Husbandry): Help with feeding, cleaning pens, refilling waters, and providing primary animal care. In emergencies, staff may also assist with veterinary visits, administering medications, and caring for sick animals.
